This is the execution guide for building AI SaaS micro products we outlined in our opportunity deep-dive. A micro SaaS product is a small, focused web application that solves one specific problem, charges a small recurring fee, and can be built by a solo developer in one to two weeks. You are not building the next Salesforce. You are building the next “AI invoice parser that small businesses pay $9/mo for.” This guide covers environment setup, development, payment integration, deployment, launch, and scaling from zero to a portfolio of paying products. Follow it in order. Do not skip steps.

Prerequisites

Before you write a single line of code, set up these accounts. Every tool listed has a free tier. You will not spend money until you have a product live and users paying for it.

  • Notion Notion — go to notion.so and sign up. Free tier is sufficient for project management, documentation, MVP scoping, and support tracking. You will use Notion throughout this guide to document decisions and track progress.

Additional tools (set up as needed):

Step 1: Set Up Your Replit Development Environment

Configure Environment Variables

This is a complete, working Flask application. Key components:

  • User model: Stores email, hashed password, payment status, usage count, and Stripe customer ID. Passwords are hashed with Werkzeug’s generate_password_hash — never store plaintext passwords.
  • Routes: Index (landing page), dashboard (main app), register/login/logout (authentication), generate (core AI feature), download (result export), pricing (subscription tiers).
  • ChatGPT API integration: The /generate route reads the uploaded CSV, iterates through each row, calls OpenAI’s gpt-4o-mini model with a product-specific prompt, and collects the generated descriptions. The gpt-4o-mini model costs approximately $0.15 per 1M input tokens and $0.60 per 1M output tokens — each product description costs roughly $0.002-0.005 to generate.
  • Free tier enforcement: Checks descriptions_generated against FREE_TIER_LIMIT before processing. Returns a 403 error with an upgrade prompt when the limit is reached.

Integrate the ChatGPT API

The ChatGPT integration is the core value proposition of your product. The key to high-quality output is the system prompt. Here is how to engineer it for consistent results:

  1. System message — Defines the AI’s role and tone. Example: "You are an expert e-commerce copywriter. Write in a professional tone." This sets consistent behavior across all requests.

  2. User message — Contains the specific input data and output requirements. Include the product name, details, category, tone, word count range, and formatting rules. Be explicit about what NOT to do (e.g., “Do not use generic phrases like ‘Introducing the’”).

  3. Temperature — Set between 0.6 and 0.8 for creative but consistent output. Lower values (0.3-0.5) produce more predictable results. Higher values (0.9-1.0) produce more varied but potentially off-brand output. For product descriptions, 0.7 is the sweet spot.

  4. Model selection — Use gpt-4o-mini for production. It is fast, cheap, and produces high-quality output for text generation tasks. Reserve gpt-4o for complex reasoning tasks — it costs 10x more with marginal quality improvement for straightforward text generation.

Add User Authentication

The application includes Flask-Login for session-based authentication. The flow is:

  1. User visits the landing page and clicks “Start Free Trial”
  2. User enters email and password on the registration form
  3. The /register route hashes the password, creates a User record, and logs them in
  4. Subsequent requests use a session cookie to authenticate the user
